Chapter 4 Activities
Fiber Analysis Lab Direction:
You are going to analyze six types of fibers: cotton, silk, wool, polyester, rayon, & nylon. You can use each page for each fiber in your notebook. For each you will need to a. write a description with a small sample of the fiber (remember fiber is almost invisible). i.e. cotton is a natural fiber widely used in textile. It comes from cotton seed and is easily dyed. b. describe the appearance of your fiber ( color, weaving pattern, texture, elasticity) c. draw its structure under the microscope at 100x or lower. The drawing needs to be at least the size of your palm. d. conduct chemical test (place the fiber in acid to see what happens). e. conduct burn test (do the following five steps for all) - near the flame (shrink away, no reaction, sparks) - on flame (melt, flame) - remove from flame (continues to burn, cease to burn) - smell (smells like burnt hair, no smell) - resulting in (ash, black bead, brittle/hard)
If you missed the burn test, watch the video in the link below and write down the difference between natural and synthetic fiber burn test result.
