Online Interactive1. Evolution of Native Hawaiian Birds. Like Galapagos islands, Hawaiian archipelago offers a plethora of variation, adaptative radiation, in organisms due to its isolation and lack of predators. We will study a few of them here.
One of the more famous examples is the variation in honeycreepers which has evolved into 51 species of finches varying in beak shapes and feather colors. Due to overhunting, introduction of predator, and avian diseases, most of these birds are extinct and rarely seen now. We will study population genetics using these beautiful Hawaiian Honeycreepers. Before coming to class watch the following two video in the link.
Jack Jeffreys: For The Birds Survivors in Paradise 1 Watch the first 15min. of the video above to complete the worksheet. In addition you will do a short research on a Hawaiian honeycreeper in your small group.
2. Evolution of flight - Dinosaur to Bird
Use the website listed on the worksheet to complete work.
3. Darwin's Survival Game
Play the game. Describe/Draw the creatures you chose to start the game then write down the selection and its result on the species allele frequency. 4. Natural Selection Virtual Lab
Go to the link then create a table to record your result. You will need to try out all combination of mutations and natural selection pressure. Propose a hypothesis then draw a conclusion from your result. Video Assignment1. Great Transformation
Please watch the video and answer the questions.
