Lab write ups are to be written in the bound notebook using ink pen. Please use only the pages on the right and use the first page for table of content. This means you need to number your laboratory notebook pages. For assessing each lab write up, certain sections are graded heavily than others depending on the nature of the laboratory work. For example, solutions lab, our main focus is the procedure. Be sure to turn in your worksheet along with your laboratory write up.

see lab Handout for Direction 1. Date of the experiment 2. Title 3. Purpose 4. Safety 5. Procedure 6. Data/Result: tape your color wheel chart. 7. Conclusion |
Solutions
1. Date of the experiment (s) 2. Title 3. Purpose: to competently prepare different types of solutions/media: Percent solution (mass & volume + 1% agarose gel), molar solution, and Media (LB agar, LB broth) and to dilute solution. 4. Safety: wear safety glasses and lab coat 5. Procedure & Data : Write all calculations involved and make a flow chart (picture) to show how to prep each solution you were asked to prepare in class. 6. Conclusion: Evaluate your competency (1-4, 4 being the best) in preparing solutions. How can you improve. |
Sterilization
1. Date of the experiment 2. Title 3. Purpose: To competently sterilize different tools, supplies, and media. 4. Safety: _________ 5. Procedure & data: Write all types of sterilization techniques used in different situations. Be sure to write them step by step (list form) if it requires more than two steps. 6. Conclusion: Discuss your competence in sterilization technique and discuss the why we need to keep sterile environment. |
Culture
1. Date of the experiment 2. Title 3. Purpose: To competently maintain different culture and to identify bacteria using morphology and staining 4. Safety:__________________ (be sure to talk about safety concerning bacteria) 5. Procedure: a. Write the procedure to identify bacteria - physical appearance and gram staining procedure b. Write the procedure to maintain bacteria culture i. LB broth ii. streaking method 6. Data: a. Write what type of bacteria were found on your skin and how you identified them. In addition discuss the E. coli Gram stain result. b. Discuss the importance of having a single colony to start any experiment and how streaking method allow you to do so. Also, talk about why overnight culture are used in most biotech experiment. 7. Conclusion: Discuss your competency in Gram staining and identifying bacteria. Also discuss your competence in growing cultures and maintaining them. |
