Extra Credit Lab Report*
You can go to http://bizarrelabs.com/cat.htm or http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/homeexpts/homeexpts.html pick a lab that is about what we have been learning in class. Performing laboratory experiments is an important aspect of studying Chemistry. Of equal importance is the manner in which the results are reported. Laboratory reports should cover all the important information related to the experiment in a concise format. The following is an outline of what your reports should include. Extra Credit Lab will be graded on 10 point scale. 1 point for each component.
Lab Write Up Guideline
All of the following components must be included in the lab write up. If any part is missing, you work will be returned to you as incomplete and no grade will be given.
1. Title: the most relevant description of the lab exercise. (1pt)
2. Purpose/Question: the purpose of the exercise or question you are trying to investigate. (1pt)
3. Hypothesis: State the hypothesis that might best describe what you have observed so far. (1pt)
4. Safety: the most important safety consideration. (1pt)
5. Materials: list of items needed for the exercise. (1pt)
6. Procedure: step by step instructions to complete the exercise (number your steps). You may use a picture flow chart. If someone is reading your procedure, they should be able to repeat the experiment. (3pt)
7. Data & Analysis: use a data table whenever possible. Data can be qualitative (descriptive information)
or quantitative (numeric measurements). You must process data if necessary. This may include graphs and math calculations. (5pts)
8. Questions& Answers: write out the questions and answer them. (5pts)
9. Conclusion: Restatement of the purpose, method (in general), data, what the data indicated, and relationship to a concept. If hypothesis was written, please accept or reject the hypothesis then use the observed data to support the decision. (5pts)
10. Teacher Judgement: Last two points come from proper disposal and cleaning of your lab area. At the conclusion of the laboratory exercise, your lab table and sink will be inspected, points will be deducted for improper clean up. Clean laboratory prevents accidents. Your safe behavior in the lab matters.
Total: 25points
