Prelab Activity: Complete Breeding Bunnies - PBS Activity before Lab2. Hardy-Weinberg Lab.
Direction: Please go to the website; read the direction; and complete the worksheet below.
Need to Bingo Chips for this.
Or complete lab 8 in the AP lab manual. It is attached below.
Prelab: Watch the video before coming to class. Go to link: AP Lab 8: Population Genetics and Evolution Or complete Population Genetic of Hawaiian Finches
Optional Activity: Allele Frequency Lab Below
Lab 3. DNA Comparison Lab
Prelab Activity: Please watch Cladogram video before coming to class.
Note: complete the Evolution of Chocolate Candies Lab before completing Lab 3: BLAST Lab. Complete pipe cleaner cladogram before the chocolate candies activity. BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) is used to compare aa sequence and/or DNA sequence.
Resource: google ENSI
Prelab 3. Please read Lab 3 Pages S41-S44 the watch the Bozemann for a walkthrough of the lab. Go to link - Comparing DNA Sequence Lecture

Where is Liaoning in China anyway?
Lab 13: Enzyme ActivityPrelab activity: Toothpickase Enzyme Lab
Extension: Evolving Enzymes Kit for AP Biology (Carolina) Bioinformatics Activity (UnitProt.org) - comparing phylogenetic tree created from catalase of bovine, chicken, potato, bakers yeast. Please predict first.
Evolution in Hawaii*Like Galapagos islands, Hawaiian archipelago offers a plethora of variation, adaptative radiation, in organisms due to its isolation and lack of predators. We will study a few of them here.
One of the more famous examples is the variation in honeycreepers which has evolved into 51 species of finches varying in beak shapes and feather colors. Due to overhunting, introduction of predator, and avian diseases, most of these birds are extinct and rarely seen now. We will study population genetics using these beautiful Hawaiian Honeycreepers. Before coming to class watch the following two video in the link.
Jack Jeffreys: For The Birds Survivors in Paradise 1 Pre -Lesson Watch the first 15min. of the video below to complete the worksheet. In addition you will do a short research on a Hawaiian honeycreeper in your small group.
Lesson 1. Population Genetic Model.
This activity will be done in class. Please read bird parasites before coming to class.
Lesson 2. Allele Frequency Activity
Lesson 3. Natural Selection & Lesson 4. Migration/Genetic Drift
Lesson 5. Pop. Genetics & Equilibrium
Lesson 6. Genetic Mechanism of malaria tolerant birds.
We will be reading the following science journal article in our groups. Each group will be assigned a section to write in plain/regular language.
Another species of interest in Hawaiian islands is Hyposmocoma caterpillars.
Lesson 1. Hypothesizing Hyposmocoma
Lesson 2. Morphological Classification
Lesson 3. Constructing a cladogram
Students use species from the previous day to construct cladograms:
Lesson 4. Molecular Phylogenetics
Study/Discuss cladogram of Hyposmocoma from Haines et.al., Nature 2014. Then complete the worksheet below.
Lesson 5. Speciation game.
Students act as Hyposmocoma moths to play a mating game and learn the key role of isolation when making new species. Then define the following terms with examples before the lesson:

Online Activity1. HHMI Rock Pocket Mouse activity
Watch the short film and answer the question in the worksheet. To answer questions in the extension, you will need to download the selection coefficient worksheet below.
2. Radford Pop-Gen Software
We will do this after Hardy-Weinberg Lab. Complete the following activity sheet to guide you.
3. PHeT Natural Selection
Play the following online interactive game and complete the worksheet. There is some prelab questions so be sure to complete them before coming to class.
4. HHMI (Howard Huge Medical Institute)
Click & Learn Activities A. Creating Phylogenetic Trees from DNA Sequences
Please watch the video 006 Phylogentics before completing the Click & Learn Activity before Lab 3: DNA Comparison Lab.
After completing the Click & Learn Phylogenetic Tree worksheet. Read the article below to get a firm understanding of evolutionary tree.
B. The Geological History of O2
Please complete the Click & Learn activity by making a worksheet and an answer key. C. Deep History of Life on Earth
Please complete the Click & Learn activity by making a worksheet and an answer key. 5. HHMI Lizard Evolution Virtual Lab
Before coming to class, please watch the video "Lizard in an evolutionary tree." Lizard Evolution Virtual Lab has four module pieces. We will do one in the classroom but other three are homework. Complete, click on progress, type in your name, and print. 6. Radioactive Dating Game
The following is an online interactive game that will help you understand topics like Radiometric Dating, Carbon Dating, Half Life, Radioactivity. If you are not able to download and run the program, please click on the title to go to direct link. Complete the worksheet below. You might want to watch the carbon dating video to quickly refresh your knowledge on carbon dating.
6. Exploring Evolution
This is an interactive online site. Go to Exploring Evolution and play along to check you knowledge of evolution. You will need to answer following questions in your notebook. a. What is evolution? What is your hypothesis regarding the whale's ancestry (before the activity)? b. What are the three types of evidence used to find the whale's ancestry? c. How (specifically) were the three evidence that helped you decide arrive at your conclusion? (help bottom is very helpful in answering this). d. What is whale's ancestry? Accept or reject your original hypothesis. Class Activities1. Fish Frequencies - Goldfish yummm
2. Chi-Squre Analysis
Chi-Square Lecture Notes is below. Chi square is a way to test your hypothesis.
Do they have same number of each color in a bag of M&Ms? Let's do a Chi-Square Analysis to investigate colors in a M&M bag. After completing the activity complete the worksheet.
POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning)We will cover POGIL 21-24 here. Answer key for POGILworksheets are available in class. Please ask Mrs. Ancheta for the POGIL book.
